While the typical Driven Student celebration involves a pizza party at the school, Tracy Chevrolet Cadillac provided these budding mechanics with something a bit more valuable: a training session on hybrid technology at the dealership.

"Even though hybrid cars have been around a while, our students really haven't exposure to them through our programs because the vehicles typically have five-year warranties and the owners bring them into the dealership for service instead of our shop at the school," said Randy Cabral, automotive instructor at Plymouth South. "Being invited down here to see that technology up close is a phenomenal experience for our students."

Rick McGue, Tracy Chevrolet Cadillac service manager, led the training session. That included looking under the hood of two hybrids, one of those vehicles belonging to Bruins legend Bobby Orr. Tracy Service Technician Steve Rasch also provided instruction on the hybrid technology and answered questions in between servicing the vehicles.

New market study, "Israel Freight Transport Report Q2 2011", has been published

However, BMI expects the strong bounce in 2010 to be followed by more subdued growth in 2011. Air freight, shipping and rail freight are expected to have stronger growth than GDP growth. BMI expects total trade in real terms to grow 3.75% in 2011.

Israel's economy still has problems and the IMF downgraded its projection for Israel's economic growth in 2011 to 3.5% from the 3.9% it had estimated in October 2010. The IMF's revised economic growth projections are a response to inflationary pressure, as the IMF sees inflation in Israel reaching 2.7% in 2011 after a 2.2% increase in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) during 2010. The Bank of Israel (BOI) decided to raise the interest rate by a quarter point on February 1 2011 to get the country's inflation rate back on target. Analysts see further tightening in coming months. Unemployment is still rising with the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) reported in late January, 2011 that on the basis of trend figures in its Labour Force Survey the unemployment rate rose to 6.8% of the civilian labour force in November 2010, amounting to 216,000 employees. Unemployment has risen since July 2010, when it was 6.5% and up from 6.6% in August 2010.

Cal State L.A. students to build ‘REFLEX Fuel Cell Plug-In Hybrid Vehicle,’ compete in EcoCAR 2

PRLog (Press Release) – Apr 15, 2011 – Los Angeles, CA – Building on its legacy of champion competition vehicles, Cal State L.A's College of Engineering, Computer Science, and Technology (ECST) has been selected to build the REFLEX Fuel Cell Plug-in Hybrid Vehicle (FC-PHEV) for the EcoCAR 2 Plugging In to the Future international competition.

EcoCAR 2 is a three-year U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) competition that provides engineering students the chance to design and build advanced vehicles that demonstrate cutting-edge automotive technologies. The competition challenges 16 North American universities to reduce the environmental impact of vehicles without compromising performance, safety and consumer acceptability.

"Students will design and build a mid-size vehicle with highly 'modular' design that utilizes a skate-board concept that integrates the latest fuel cell and electric vehicle advanced propulsion technologies," said David Blekhman, an associate professor in ECST who is leading the team. "The modularity will aid in manufacturing flexibility, vehicle service and consumer convenience. The vehicle will also have the options of PHEV20 or 40 to fit the consumer individual driving needs, hence the FLEX designation."

All the student teams will utilize a vehicle donated by General Motors as the integration platform for their vehicle designs. They will be encouraged to explore a variety of powertrain architectures and follow a real-world engineering regimen modeled after GM's Global Vehicle Development Process.

For control and communications, the team will explore adopting mobile-distributed computing platforms similar to iPad. In addition to performance, these systems will be designed to assure vehicle, passenger, and pedestrian safety, and effective transportation systems integration. REFLEX (Range Extended Flexible platform) will also be developed to meet the stringent Zero Emissions Vehicle standards as categorized by the California Air Resources Board.

To develop student training and REFLEX's design, the team will also rely on support from CSULA's industrial, public and government partners and sponsors. Sponsors include: California Air Resources Board; Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa; California Fuel Cell Partnership; USHybrid; the Southern California Section of the Society of Automotive Engineers; Hydrogen Education Foundation; Clean Energy; ZT Plus Thermoelectric Materials, and Hy-Gen Industries.

To attract new students, the College will offer interdisciplinary courses that teach electric, hybrid and fuel cell vehicle technology, fuel cell applications, electronic and computer controls, as well as introduce automotive topics to CSULA's Department of Mechanical an automobile news d Electrical Engineering and Computer Science programs.

EcoCAR 2 is a unique opportunity for students to be exposed to state-of-the-art technologies and participate in the development of 21st century Infiniti m hybird automotive industry solutions.

"Our EcoCAR 2 team will actively participate in outreach programs promoting the competition and the advanced propulsion technologies it represents. ESCT students regularly host K-12 students in a variety of venues, work with community colleges on joint projects, and cooperate with the local bmw M5 specification community and industry," explained Blekhman.

CSULA is also completing the construction of a hydrogen fueling facility, the likely choice to design and build a FC-PHEV that could support additional sustainable green communities in California.
