The name illustrates the vehicle's fun-to-drive nature, said Chris Perry, Chevy's vice president of U.S. Marketing. We guess that's a good reason, but we can't stop conjuring images of Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog.

Same Standard Engine as Bigger Cruze – Intended for sale around the world, the Sonic coming to America will have the same engine lineup as its bigger brother, the Chevrolet Cruze. As standard equipment, a 1.8-liter inline four-cylinder engine will drive the Sonic's front wheels through a five-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. Making 135 horsepower and 123 pound-feet of torque (90 percent of which is available from 2,400 to 6,500 rpm), the Sonic's engine should have no trouble motivating it first drive audi a6 s subcompact size.
Turbocharged Engine Option – If the standard engine isn't strong enough for you, a turbocharged, 1.4-liter four-cylinder from the larger Chevy Cruze is also available. It makes 138 horsepower peaking 1,400 rpm lower than the standard engine, and features a thick wad of torque in the middle of its rev range (148 pound-feet between 1,850 and 4,900 rpm). Providing plenty of oomph in a car of this size, the turbo motor is paired only with a six-speed manual transmission, so you'd better plan to get your clutch on with this model.
Suspension by Corvette Engineers – In a bid to make the Sonic truly fun to drive, Chevy turned its Corvette engineers loose on the Sonic's MacPherson strut front and semi-independent torsion beam rear suspension. Available 17-inch wheels shod with 205/50 tires ought to help in the handling department, and the Sonic's electric steering is tuned to deliver better feel than past GM attempts.
Class-leading Interior Space – Chevrolet claims that the new Sonic has more rear seat and cargo space than any other car in its class, which should help mitigate buyer concerns about trading comfort and functionality for better fuel economy and a lower price tag. In fact, Chevy says the Sonic sedan's 14 cu-ft trunk is bigger inside than many found in the compact class. The Sonic hatchback is even more commodious, swallowing 19 cu-ft of cargo with the rear seat in use and 30.7 cu-ft with the rear seat folded almost completely flat.
Motorcycle-inspired Gauges – Handsome and bold inside and out, the new Sonic features a wraparound dashboard that can be color-coordinated to the exterior and features a motorcycle-inspired gauge cluster with an analog tachometer flanked by digital displays for speed, fuel level, and other information. The steering wheel is a meaty three-spoke design complete with proper thumb rests at the 10 and 2 positions.
Bluetooth, USB and MyChevrolet – Chevrolet plans to offer an auxiliary input audio jack, a USB port, XM satellite radio, and Bluetooth hands-free wireless communication in the new 2012 Sonic. OnStar telematics service with Turn-by-Turn navigation is also included, and carries a free six-month subscription. There's also a MyChevro automobile news let smartphone app which works through OnStar MyLink technology to provide the Sonic's owner with a direct connection to the car from anywhere in the world.
Ten Airbags, and More! – The new 2012 Sonic is equipped with 10 airbags: dual 2011 Chrysler 200 Convertible front, seat-mounted side for both the front and rear seat occupants, dual side curtains for both rows of seats, and dual front knee airbags. Front disc, rear drum brakes with ABS, electronic brake-force distribution and brake assist also come standard, along with Automatic Crash Response service. In the event of an accident, and as long as your OnStar subscription is active, the Sonic's telematics system can contact authorities and get help even if you have been injured to the point where you are unconscious.
Built in Michigan – Chevrolet will build the new 2012 Sonic in Lake Orion Township, Mich., restoring about 1,000 jobs to the metro Detroit area. General Motors points out that the Sonic is the only car in its class that is built in the U.S., a bit of a dig at the Mexico-sourced Ford Fiesta.
